Can I Bypass the Starter Relay on a 4 Wheeler? thumbnail
People 4 wheeling offroad sometimes get stuck in mud or snow.

The starter relay for a 4 wheeler is a solenoid. The solenoid is an electromagnet that throws a switch to engage the starter when the ignition switch is turned to "start." Removing the ignition switch from "start" disengages the starter.

  1. Jump Start With Battery

    • Use jumper cables to connect the battery side of the starter to the positive terminal of the battery. Remove the clamp from the starter as soon as the engine starts. Make certain the vehicle transmission is in neutral with the emergency brake engaged.

    Jump Start With Clutch

    • Place the 4 wheeler at the top of a hill or grade. Turn the ignition to "on," push the clutch pedal down and start rolling downhill. Release the clutch pedal when you've built up speed. You can also use another vehicle or people to push your vehicle.

    Use Starter Bypass Switch

    • Some 4 wheelers have a starter bypass switch. This allows the vehicle to crank without the clutch pedal fully pushed down. This was designed for use in mud and snow, or on steep slopes.

    Warning

    • Jump starting with the battery will produce sparks. Wear protective gloves and do not jump start near gasoline tanks or spills. The jump start with clutch procedure will not work with an automatic transmission.
