The water pump is the heart of your F-350 diesel's cooling system.

The water pump is the heart of your F-350 diesel's cooling system, circulating coolant between your radiator and engine block. When the unit fails, it is usually the sealed bearing that is to blame.

  1. Drain the System

    • Disconnect your battery and drain your F-350's cooling system. You will need a large receptacle -- your vehicle holds 23 quarts of coolant

    Remove Shroud and Fan

    • Remove the radiator shroud, the fan clutch and the fan itself. The fan clutch bolts are right-hand threaded and require a counter-clockwise turn with your socket and drive.

    Remove Pulley

    • Loosen the water pump pulley bolts but do not remove them. Remove the drive belt. Now remove the water pump pulley bolts and detach the pulley from the pump. Detach the ECT sensor connector with your hand.

    Remove Pump

    • Remove the heater hose from your water pump. Remove the bolts that attach the water pump to the block and lift the pump free. When you install your new pump on your F-350 diesel, Ford specifies a torque of 15 foot-pounds for the water pump bolts and 12 to 18 foot-pounds of torque for the pulley retaining bolts.
