Honda Civic Flywheel Removal
The flywheel is a disc connecting the transaxle and the engine. The flywheel stores rotational energy and helps to translate the power generated by the engine to the drive of the wheels on the road.
-
Purpose of the Flywheel
-
The engine produces power and spins the flywheel disc. The disc has large metal teeth that grab and a series of clutch discs. The clutch discs engage the transaxle and relay the engine's power to the wheels.
Location of the Flywheel
-
The flywheel is located under a series of clutch discs in the back of and on the bottom side of the engine block. It is sandwiched between the transaxle and the engine block. The transaxle and clutch disc assembly must be removed to expose the flywheel.

Flywheel Removal
-
When removing the clutch discs, it is important to unfasten the six retaining bolts in a crisscross pattern to avoid warping the flywheel. Once the clutch discs are removed, the flywheel is held in by a large center nut. Use a socket wrench to remove the nut.
