Men's Fashion in the Early 1900s

Men's Fashion in the Early 1900s thumbnail
Men's clothing in the 1900s differed widely from what men wear today.

Men started to be more conscious of their clothes after the Civil War, when clothing became more formal. Many of the men's clothing styles in the early 1900s led to those of the 1920s and were influenced by European fashions. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tops

    • Men wore button-down shirts that didn't have a collar, so they had to attach a separate collar with studs. A vest that either matched or didn't match the suit was worn over the shirt. They also wore loose fitting, double-breasted jackets with broad and padded shoulders.

    Pants

    • In the early 1900s, men often wore long slim trousers with a little fullness at the top. The pants had a straight waist, and striped trousers were also in fashion. Men wore pants with belts or suspenders.

    Shoes and Accessories

    • High buttoned shoes were in fashion in the early 1900s. Some men wore formal top hats and bowler hats or less formal straw hats in warmer weather. Men wore gloves even in warm weather and sometimes walked with canes, even if they were not necessary. Ties were longer and skinnier than ties of today. The men wore socks with garters over drawers.
