Lexus Es300 Steering Problems

A Lexus Es300 is a mid-sized luxury sedan that can experience steering problems from time to time just like any other car. An owner must take precautions to maintain and replace faulty parts of the steering system.

Steering Wheel Freeplay

  • Sometimes a steering wheel can become jammed or become difficult to turn. Check the steering wheel freeplay by rocking the steering wheel back and forth while the vehicle is in park and the wheels are facing straight ahead. The freeplay should not exceed 1.18 inches.

Steering Wheel Effort

  • If there is binding in the steering gear then it will take a strong effort to turn the wheel. Check the steering wheel effort by centering the wheel and then removing the steering wheel pad. Start the engine and then measure the effort in both directions. Torque the steering wheel nut to 26 foot-pounds, then replace the steering wheel pad.

Check the Vane Pump

  • The vane pump provides hydraulic fluid flow in the power steering system. Use a micrometer and a caliber gauge to check there there is enough oil clearance in the vane pump. The standard clearance is 0.03 mm to 0.05 mm and the maximum clearance is 0.07 mm.
