Jeep Transfer Case Problems

A cracked shift fork can cause Jeep transfer case problems.

A Jeep transfer case, which holds the low range gears and attaches to the front and rear axles and the transmission, is a key part of the four wheel drive system. Jeep transfer cases can develop operational problems that can typically be resolved by checking some common trouble areas.

  1. Whining Noise

    • A whining noise emanating from the Jeep front axle during engine acceleration and deceleration can be caused by a bad propeller shaft or worn wheel bearings. Inspect the shaft and bearings for signs of wear or damage and make any necessary replacements.

    Gear Jumping

    • If the gear jumps or slips, a cracked shift fork, which enables movement of the gears, or damaged gear linkage may be to blame. Access the cam case and inspect the fork and linkage components for damage or wear and replace them to restore proper transfer case function.

    Difficulty Shifting

    • Difficulty shifting between gears can be caused by binding or bent shift linkage. Inspect the linkage and adjust it based on the owner's manual for your Jeep year and model, or replace it if signs of damage are apparent.
