A light pen can interact directly with a CRT monitor

A light pen is a computer input device that works as an alternative to a mouse or track-pad. It works by absorbing light from a computer remote terminal (CRT) screen and then using the information to interact with the display.

  1. History

    • The light pen was originally developed by IBM in the late 1950s. In the 1960s, it was improved to interact with CRT signals. Many improvements have been made to the design and functionality of the pens since then.

    Advantages

    • There are some practical advantages to using light pens. Ergonomically, they are better than mice and don't take up desk space. The primary advantage though is the ease of drawing with a pen and improved accuracy, especially for design and technical documents.

    Buttons

    • Most light pens have three buttons which can be used to initiate different functions between the pen and the computer. Using the buttons is similar to using the buttons on the mouse. Certain applications may have additional functionality with the light pen.

    Compatibility

    • Most light pens are designed to be compatible with Microsoft Windows operating systems. Pens are designed to be compatible with CRT systems and will not work with LCD or flat panel monitors.
