How to Compare Wireless Print Servers
Wireless print servers make it possible to connect a USB printer directly to a wireless network, while allowing others to share and print documents without requiring another computer to be switched on. There are three types of print servers that can be used in the field, as of 2011.
-
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)
-
A common form of wireless technology used in homes and businesses, Wi-Fi uses routers that are connected to the Internet and are able to create wireless networks. Wi-Fi networks are also known as wireless local area networks (WLANs). Wi-Fi networks also produce wireless connections that are within the range of 150 feet.
Bluetooth
-
The Bluetooth wireless print server is a short-range wireless connection that can be used for computers, printers, mouse pads and keyboard. It takes away the wires, but it only has a 30-foot wireless connection range. Bluetooth uses a function called discoverable mode that will wirelessly connect it to other Bluetooth friendly hardware.
-
Infrared
-
Infrared wireless print servers are a very similar concept to how the Bluetooth functions. However, its discoverable mode uses infrared light to communicate with other devices such as printers, computers and handheld devices.
