A Mold Smell From a Bathroom Sink Drain

Save

If you smell an odor in the bathroom that will not go away after proper cleaning, odds are you have a mold problem. A mold smell from the bathroom sink drain is a musty odor that permeates the entire room.

Causes of Mold

  • Mold only needs moisture and an enclosed space. Besides water, other substances like hair, soap and toothpaste run down your bathroom sink drain, sticking to the sides of the drain and creating a haven for mold.

How It Affects Your Health

  • Mold in bathrooms can cause health problems for people who suffer from asthma or have poor immune systems. Common ailments associated with constant exposure to mold include headaches, sinus problems, eye irritation, skin irritation and cough, reports the New York State Department of Health.

Cleaning Up Mold

  • You can remove mold from the bathroom sink drain with a mildew remover that does not contain ammonia. Ensure the room receives proper ventilation as ammonia emits a strong odor. If the room does not have a window, use the exhaust fan. It's a good idea to pour boiling hot water down the drain periodically to help clear buildup and decrease the growth of mold.
