Chevrolet 2.8 Oil Capacity

The Chevrolet 2.8-liter engine was used in several vehicles including the Cavalier Z24, S-10 and Camaro. When changing the oil in this engine, it is important to fill the engine with the correct amount of oil and to use the correct weight.

  • The oil system in the Chevy 2.8-liter engine operates under pressure, which is affected by the oil level. The proper oil level in this engine is four quarts, not including the oil filter. The oil filter will typically hold another 1/4 to 1/2 quart.

  • Capacity is not the only important factor that affects the performance of the oil system; the weight of the oil used is also important. Using oil that is too heavy will decrease fuel economy and may damage an aging oil pump; oil that is too light might not properly lubricate the engine. The recommended oil weight to use in the 2.8-liter engine is 5W30.

  • You might think that your oil being just a little low or a little over the fill level won't hurt anything. However, overfilling can cause excessive pressure and lead to major oil leaks from older rubber seals and gaskets. If the oil level is too low, the engine will not receive adequate oil, especially in the valvetrain, which may cause severe damage and engine failure.
