Steering Wheel Cover Lacing Instructions

Steering Wheel Cover Lacing Instructions thumbnail
Steering wheels can have various types of covers applied to them.

Vehicle steering wheel covers offer a unique feel and look to a typical steering wheel assembly. Many covers, such as those made of leather, need to be attached by lacing them around the circumference of the wheel.

  1. Identification

    • Aside from lacing string, a needle and a wheel cover, other items necessary for installation are isopropyl alcohol and masking tape. Before installation, be sure to clean the bare steering wheel with the alcohol so that the temporary installation adhesives can be attached securely.

    Installation

    • Place the cover on the steering wheel. Use masking tape at the wheel spokes to attach the cover temporarily. Beginning below the first wheel spoke, use the needle and lacing string to stitch along the backside of the wheel and past the spoke area, lacing two times at the top of the spoke. After passing the spoke, begin lacing the two sides of the cover together to form a firm seam following the line of the wheel itself.

    Considerations

    • After lacing the circumference of the cover, remove the masking tape and allow the permanent adhesive stickers to take their place. This will keep the cover firmly in place along with the tightly-sewn lacing.
