What Type of Circuit Is an FM Radio?

FM radios have come a long way since their development and invention in the early 1900s. However, even with the advent of digital technology most FM radios consumers utilize a type of circuit known as the superheterodyne receiver, or superhet.

    • Edwin Armstrong is credited with inventing the superhet during World War I. The early application of the technology was for radio direction finding equipment, but it became apparent that the benefits of the superhet design would allow for the selective tuning of radio stations.

      An FM radio circuit works by selectively amplifying the signal of the desired station through a radio frequency (rf) amplifier. The selected frequency is inputted into a mixer which combines the signal with a locally generated signal from an oscillator. The resulting signal is known as an intermediate frequency (IF), and the IF is fed into a tuned, pre-set amplifier.

      Modern FM radio circuits solved the problem of having to adjust many dials in order to tune a radio to the desired station. FM radio also has the advantage of making the signal stronger against competing noise and interference. These qualities make FM a better signal for high-frequency, high fidelity transmissions.
