A 1992 Honda Civic uses hydraulic transmission fluid to shift gears.

The automatic transmission in your 1992 Honda Civic uses Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. The fluid serves as a lubricant to the gears as well as a hydraulic fluid to power gear shifting.

  1. Locate Transmission Fluid Dipstick

    • Open the hood of the Honda Civic. Inspect around the engine block of the vehicle for a red dipstick head. The head of the dipstick will be just off the engine block. It is a small, red handle running into a thin metal pipe. The red plastic handle will be labeled "Transmission Fluid."

    Read Fluid Level

    • Run the vehicle for five minutes until the engine is at operating temperature. Look at the temperature gauge behind the steering wheel. When the needle on the gauge no longer moves, the vehicle is at operating temperature. Turn off the car. Pull the dipstick from the thin metal pipe. Use a paper towel to wipe the stick clean of transmission fluid. Insert the stick back into its metal tube. Remove the stick, and visually inspect the bottom of the stick to determine the amount of fluid. If it is short, fill the transmission with fluid.

Fill the Transmission with Transmission Fluid

    • Insert a small funnel into the thin metal tube of the transmission fluid dipstick. Pour Dexron III transmission fluid into the tube a little bit at a time. Read the fluid level every time a small portion of fluid is poured in. Do not overfill the transmission. Check your owner's manual or read the dipstick to determine the proper level.
