LCD Vs. LED Technology

Knowing the difference between LCD and LED technology can help people who are shopping for a television or computer monitor make an educated purchase. Consumers should study the advantages and disadvantages of LCD versus LED displays.

  1. Lighting

    • Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) use backlight illumination technologies. The difference between LCD and LED displays, however, have to do with the way in which backlighting is used. For instance, LCD displays have fluorescent lighting technology to illuminate monitors or televisions, while LEDs use light diodes to project light onto a display.

    Longevity

    • Many consumers are concerned with the longevity of LCD versus LED displays. LCDs can experience burn-in, which is a shadowy image on the screen that does not go away. LED displays do not have burn-in problems due to the difference in their backlight technology. Another feature of LEDs that enhances their lifespan is that they consume approximately 40 percent less energy than LCDs, according to "PC World."

    Viewing Angles

    • "PC World" says that LED technology offers superior viewing angles over LCDs, due to the LED's backlight distribution. However, LCD and LEDs both offer wide viewing angles, which are ideal for maintaining contrast ratio and color throughout the viewing range.
