CD Rippers
-
For free CD ripping, look at "Exact Audio Copy." This program is free for non-commercial use and uses advanced error correction technology. It can correct for scratches on the CD that you're trying to copy, resulting in perfect audio replication of the CD source. The technologies in play here are "multi-reading with verify" and "AccurateRip" technology. Another good choice is "dBpoweramp." This ripper has advanced technologies such as PerfectMeta for CD data auto-filling, Multi-CPU Aware for full CPU utilization and extremely fast CD ripping.
DVD Ripping
-
For free DVD ripping, try "DVD Decrypter." It's relatively user-friendly and user guides are available online if you get stuck. If you want more conversion power in your ripping program, look into "Magic DVD ripper." This adds some features not included in DVD Decrypter, such as DVD conversion to AVI, WMV, MP4 and DivX. It also removes DVD protection restrictions and allows for 4.7 GB size output without shrinking, all at high ripping speed.

DVD Ripping - Shrinking
-
If you choose "DVD Decrypter," you still have to figure out how to get the DVD files to fit on a standard 4.3 GB DVD-R disc. This is done automatically by "DVD Shrink," which shrinks your DVD ISO files down to burnable sizes using video and audio compression, and the optional removal of DVD extra features. The program is easy to use, sports a clean interface and look, and is free. Keep in mind you don't need to use DVD Shrink if you purchase "Magic DVD Ripper," as it can output 4.7 GB files with built-in shrinking within the program.
