ATI Nvidia Graphics Card Comparison

While the performance edge has changed hands between ATI and NVIDIA since the late 90s, NVIDIA graphics cards tend to offer more performance than ATI cards of the same class. However, ATI cards consistently offer more for the price.

  1. Performance

    • As of 2010, ATI's largest line of graphics cards is the Radeon HD, while NVIDIA's is the GeForce GTX. According to Tech Radar, the Radeon HD 4870 operates at 80 percent the speed of its NVIDIA counterpart, the GeForce GTX 280. A similar gap exists between higher-end models, the GeForce GTX 480 and Radeon HD 587. Techspot reports the NVIDIA card runs 16 percent faster.

    Value

    • While NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 and 280 are faster than ATI's Radeon HD 587 and 4870, the ATI cards are less expensive. Perhaps most dramatically, the Radeon HD 4870 was only half the price of its NVIDIA rival at the time of its 2008 release. This illustrates a factor across the board that ATI cards generally give users more for their money.

    Considerations

    • Most video editing, 3D rendering and gaming programs run better on one platform than the other. Sometimes, however, the performance gap closes. Techspot states that on certain games, the ATI card showed no significant performance difference when compared to its more expensive NVIDIA counterpart.
