Internet Explorer is no longer developed for Macs.

Microsoft officially dropped support for Internet Explorer, or IE, for Mac computers in 2003. The last supported version of IE for Macs is 5.2.3. If you have an Intel-based Mac, other programs exist that will allow you to use IE again.

  1. Microsoft

    • In June 2003, Microsoft announced that it was dropping development of IE for Macs. Microsoft Product Manager Jessica Sommer said at the time that "The feedback we're getting from our customers and the features they're asking for is all pointing to Apple and Safari." Sommer indicated that because Apple had better access to the Mac operating system and its development that Apple was better positioned to give Mac users what they wanted.

    IE 5.2.3

    • Microsoft IE 5.2.3 is still available through archive.org for anyone who still wants or needs a copy. Users should be aware though that, because it is more than 5 years old, many current websites will not work properly on this version.

    Winebottler

    • For Intel-based Macs, a new, free, application called Winebottler allows users to run Windows applications in Mac operating systems. Using this application, Mac users can upgrade to a newer version of IE. Users should be aware, however, that Microsoft provides no support for this, which means that help is not available for bugs or technical problems.
