What Is an ERP Web Enabled System?

ERP, which stands for Enterprise Resource Planning, is a methodology for integrating business applications into a single system that shares formats, data and processing rules. Most systems today are web-enabled even though the majority of the larger vendors wrote their ERP offerings before the web was used to access application software.

  1. What is Web Enabled?

    • Web enabled simply means that you can access an application through a web browser. The browser talks to an application or web server, which executes the program at the server instead of on your computer. The application should behave like other web applications, for example, in navigation and use of links.

    Developed for the Web

    • Some vendors recoded their applications to make use of web tools. One of the first major vendors to do this was PeopleSoft, now part of Oracle. The redevelopment effort was large but they felt that the web was the future vehicle for all business transactions.

    Web Front-End

    • A shortcut to making your product web enabled is to place a front end between the user and the system. A front end is a program or programs that operate on the web and talk to the existing non-web enabled programs passing data back and forth to simulate web based applications. These often do not allow you to use all of the web functionality such as the back button or favorites and bookmarks.

    Considerations

    • The key difference in a web front end and having the application programs written for the web is that a front end presents extra layers in front of what is already multiple layers found in modern applications. Not only will the system be less responsive, but troubleshooting problems becomes more difficult because there are more possible sources of errors.
