Fire drills should be practiced on a regular basis.

Fire evacuation drills are used by public and private organizations to prepare for an emergency situation. The fire drill and evacuation planning guidelines used by the cities and school districts in Illinois can be used as examples of proper procedures to implement.

  1. Employee Drills

    • Every agency or organization in Illinois should have a building evacuation plan in place for employees to follow during an emergency. The evacuation plan should clearly outline the evacuation routes to use during an evacuation of the building. The fire evacuation drill should include procedures for accounting for employees after the evacuation.

    Schools Drills

    • During a school fire evacuation drill the teachers are responsible for making sure that their students proceed in an orderly manner. There should be no talking between the students. The teachers and the students should assemble in a common area where the principal or superintendent can take attendance.

    Practice

    • Fire drill evacuations should be practiced on a regular basis. The fire drills should be conducted on at least a quarterly basis.
