Avoid getting lost in a conversation about computers by learning some basic terminologies. Hundreds of computer-related words have been added to dictionaries, but you can start by familiarizing yourself with basic computer lingo.

Computer Parts

The basic parts of a computer include the monitor, keyboard and mouse. The monitor is the computer's screen and displays pictures and programs. The keyboard is used for typing and has numbers, letters and other keys. A mouse is moved around a flat surface, usually on a mouse pad, to enable you to move the pointer on the screen and to click on certain buttons.
Computer Accessories

Some common computer accessories are the modem, printer and scanner. A modem is a device that allows you to connect to the Internet by transmitting data over telephone or cable lines. A printer is a device that allows you to print files from your computer, such as a document or image. A scanner is a device that allows you to copy an image or a document onto your computer.

Computer Acronyms

CD stands for Compact Disc, and ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. A CD-ROM is used to store computer information and can't be erased. RAM, which stands for Random Access Memory, stores information temporarily. K, MB and GB are measurement terms used to describe data storage capable of holding a certain amount of characters. K is short for kilobyte and stands for about 1000 bytes. MB is short for Megabyte and is about a million bytes and GB, or gig, is short for Gigabyte and is about a billion bytes.
