Specs for the AMC 360

The American Motors Corporation produced the AMC 360-cubic-inch V8 engine for its Matador and Jeep vehicles. Introduced in 1971, it arrived late to be a factor in the muscle car wars but it still offered formidable power.

  1. Early Version

    • The 1971 360 is a member AMC's "small block" engine family that includes the 304, 390 and 401 V8s. The first version had a 4.08-inch cylinder bore and 3.44-inch stroke with an 8.5:1 compression ratio. With a single two-barrel carburetor, the 360 generated 245 horsepower and 365 ft.-lbs. of torque. The torque provides quick acceleration.

    Restrictions

    • By 1972, Detroit automakers reduced horsepower ratings because of rising insurance premiums on cars equipped with big engines and stricter federal emission requirements. The 360 maintained the same bore and stroke and compression ratio, but the horsepower dropped to 175 with 285 ft.-lbs. of torque.

    Four-Barrel

    • A four-barrel carburetor was available in 1973 that boosted horsepower that exceeded the 1972 V8. The new horsepower rated was 195 with 295 ft.-lbs. of torque.
