Network cables are the backbone of a computer-based network. They enable computers to communicate with one another and serve as the basic building block for the Internet. Many of the seamless computing functions available today would not be possible without the network cable.

  1. UTP Cable

    • The basic network cable is a UTP cable. It consists of eight copper conductors contained within a thin plastic cover. Four of these conductors are used to reduce the "cross-talk" effect, which is noise generated by a metal conductor that will interfere with one next to it. So, in short, four conductors carry data and the other four carry the noise away from them.

    Straight-Through Cable

    • Straight-through cable is used to connect a network switch to a workstation computer or network server. This type of cable can be used to connect a switch to a router or provide a connection between different devices.

    Crossover Cable

    • Crossover cable is used to connect one network switch to another, or one computer to computer another. This special type of cable configuration is used to connect devices of the same type.
