What Is the Gas Mileage for a 1972 Camaro RS?

What Is the Gas Mileage for a 1972 Camaro RS? thumbnail
The Camaro remained a high-performance car as the muscle car era was coming to a close in the early 70s.

The RS, or Rally Sport, was a trim package for the Camaro in 1972. Other trim packages were the SS and Z28. Fuel efficiency was important in 1972, so a six-cylinder was added to the lineup of V-8 engines.

  1. Features

    • Three engines were available on the Camaro RS, which had come into its own as a solid performance sports car. A 250 cubic-inch inline six-cylinder was introduced for better fuel mileage. The other two available engines were V-8 power plants with either 307 or 350 cubic inches. Automatic or manual transmissions also affected gas mileage.

    Six-Cylinder

    • The six-cylinder, turbo thrift 250-cubic-inch engine offered the best gas mileage for the Camaro RS. With this setup, the car with a manual transmission got 14.3 miles per gallon on the highway and 8.4 in city driving. With an automatic transmission, the mileage was 13.9 on the highway and 10 in city driving.

    V8 models

    • The V8 350 cubic-inch Camaro RS had plenty of power but did not do so well on gas consumption. It was rated at 11.3 to 11.9 miles per gallon on the highway and at 6.7 to 7 miles per gallon in city driving, depending on transmission. The 307 cubic-inch fared a little better. It managed 12.1 to 13.3 miles per gallon highway and 6.9 to 8.2 miles per gallon in city driving, depending on transmission.
