Prius Headlight Problems

Not where you want to lose your headlights.

Toyota has had hundreds of complaints about the optional xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights in the 2005 through 2008 models of their Prius vehicle. The most frequent problem was that the headlights would suddenly and unaccountably go out.

  1. HID Only

    • The standard Toyota Prius headlights have not been the subject of an unusual number of complaints. The optional HID headlights are the concern, in which sudden lamp failures could result in a driver traveling at high speed at night suddenly losing one or both headlamps.

    Big Bucks

    • Another serious concern with HID headlights on the Prius is the cost. Integrated components for the headlights are very expensive. A single replacement bulb costs approximately $150. Some owners have spent as much as $1,800 to repair headlights on the Prius when the warranty had expired.

    Legal Actions

    • In August 2010, a federal judge in Los Angeles refused to dismiss a class action lawsuit that has been filed against Toyota for the HID headlights. Volkswagen is also facing a suit for a similar HID headlight system.
