Unlike AC power jacks, DC power jacks are not standardized nor used for outlets.

DC (direct current) power jacks transfer power from one electronic device or adapter to another electronic device. Unlike alternating current, commonly called AC jacks that send power two ways, DC jacks only send power in one direction.

  1. Uses

    • DC jacks are used in many electronic devices, including cell phones, computer systems and sound systems. Typically the DC jack is on one end of an adapter that features an AC jack on the other side to connect to an power outlet to provide electricity for the device.

    Not Universal

    • Manufacturers often create DC jacks and adapters specifically for their product, which means that DC jacks are far from universal. Even products by the same company, for example various models of cell phones by the same manufacturer, will have different, non-compatible DC jacks.

    Standardization

    • AC jacks are standardized by country and connect to power outlets on the walls of buildings. DC jacks only connect to DC outlets of specific devices. Attempting to connect a DC jack into the non-corresponding DC outlet or AC outlet can break the jack.
