Massachusetts Gun License Laws
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has what it considers to be some of the most stringent gun control laws in the United States. These laws became effective on June 1, 1998, with the Gun Control Act.

Types
-
There are two types of gun licenses. The first is a class "A" license to carry (LTC). The carrier of this permit may purchase, ow, and carry any type of ammunition, handguns, rifles, shotguns and feeding devices. The owner of a class "A" LTC may also carry a concealed handgun. Class "B" LTCs permit the same, but do not allow the bearer to "conceal and carry."
Licenses
-
To obtain a class "A" or "B" LTC, an applicant must be at least 21 years old. New applicants are required to complete a Massachusetts regulated firearms safety course or a hunter education course. As of December 2010, there is a $100.00 fee for both types, which are valid for six years.

Ineligibility
-
Certain people are restricted from obtaining an LTC in Massachusetts. This includes anyone who is not a legal Massachusetts resident; a convicted felon; someone with a conviction for unlawful firearm use or possession, drug dealing, or who is an alcoholic; persons who reside in a mental hospital or institution; and anyone who is currently under order by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to surrender his LTC.
