What Is a Pump Diffuser?

What Is a Pump Diffuser? thumbnail
A pump diffuser makes a centrifugal pump more efficient.

A pump diffuser is part of a centrifugal pump designed to make the pump more efficient by optimizing the flow of the liquid being pumped. This makes the flow more controlled and increases the liquid pressure, increasing the effect of the centrifugal pump's motion.

  1. Vanes

    • The "diffuser" in a centrifugal pump takes the form of fixed diffuser vanes. These are placed around the centrifugal impeller (the spinning part that creates centrifugal force).

    Effect

    • The effect of the vanes is to increase the amount of pressure on each unit of liquid being pumped. This increases the conversion rate of energy produced by the impeller to pressure flow, making the pump more efficient.

    Efficiency and Viscosity

    • Diffuser vanes can make a pump up to 90 percent more efficient. However, for a diffuser to be suitable, the liquid being pumped must not be too viscous, otherwise the mechanism would become clogged because of the increased pressure.
