Missouri Fishing Laws
Whether you're seasoned or just starting out, fishing can prove to be both a calming and exciting activity. No matter your level of expertise, all participants should be aware of state fishing laws.

Missouri Department of Conservation
-
Conservation organizations like the MDC serve to protect nature and wildlife. Since 1937, the Missouri Department of Conservation has striven "to restore, conserve and regulate Missouri's over-stressed fisheries, forests and wildlife populations." From professional to amateur fishermen, the MDC keeps people updated on fishing laws and regulations, in addition to fishing seasons, locations, methods and permits.
Types of Fishing Permits
-
Missouri offers six different types of fishing permits. In Missouri, there are six types of fishing permits: Daily Fishing, Nonresident Fishing, Resident Fishing, Resident Hunting and Fishing, Trout and White River Border Lakes. A permit's length and the types of fish permissible to hunt vary from permit to permit. Permit holders must have their permits with them while fishing.

Purchasing a Fishing Permit
-
Missouri fishing permits vary in price. Fishing permits can run anywhere from a few dollars to several hundred. Aside from lifetime fishing permits for Missouri residents, permits are available for purchase online or by phone through the MDC, or from local permit vendors. Additional fees may apply.
A Permissive Code
-
The MDC keeps fishermen updated with a permissive hunting code. The MDC understands that those new to fishing, as well as veterans, may be overwhelmed by Missouri's constantly changing fishing laws and regulations. For that reason, the MDC's Wildlife Code of Missouri is permissive. This means the MDC only lists those animals permit holders are allowed to hunt.
Fishing Permit Free
-
Parents can introduce children to fishing on Free Fishing Days in Missouri. Fishing without a permit is tolerated in a few cases. One instance is if you are fishing in waters that are privately stocked, which includes trout fishing if the area is privately owned and licensed. Another is MDC's annual Free Fishing Days. For two consecutive days during the summer, MDC allows people to fish without a permit.
