How Fast Can a Moped Go? thumbnail
Many mopeds offer fuel economy of approximately 100 mpg.

Contemporary mopeds are low-speed, road-worthy vehicles equipped for driving short distances. According to the History of the Vespa, they were named for their predecessors -- motorized bicycles operated by pushing the pedals.

  1. Moped Engines

    • Due to their small cylinder capacity -- less than 50 cc by definition, according to the Federal Highway Administration, mopeds cannot reach the speeds required for highway driving, and are generally used as city vehicles. Most states will not allow mopeds to be legally registered if they are able to travel at more than 30 mph, which is 10 mph below the minimum highway speed.

    Top Speeds of Mopeds

    • The top speed of a contemporary moped is about 30 mph. Some countries, including Canada, permit mopeds to travel at 43 mph, according to the Canadian Ministry of Service.

    Moped Operating Regulations

    • Most states set the minimum age of a moped operator between 14 and 16. Some state, including Arkansas and New Mexico, have set the minimum driving age as low as 10 or 13, according to "Just Landed's." Everyone under the age of 19 must wear a helmet in most states and helmets are required for everyone on a moped in 22 states.
