Digital Vs. Analog Technology

Digital technology provides a wider range of functionality for devices such as this cell phone.

While the concept of digital and analog technology can be complicated, digital and analog are terms that denote the way electronic signals are transmitted. While analog technology has been around for over three decades, in 2010 many electronic devices utilize digital technology.

Primary Difference

The primary difference in digital versus analog technology is that analog technology transmits signals through electronic pulses, while digital technology uses a binary code of 0's and 1's. Analog signals are actual representations of the data being transmitted that are scanned by the device receiving the data; digital signals are estimates of the signal represented by 1's and 0's that are translated by the device receiving the signal.

Advantages of Analog

Since digital technology only provides an estimation of data or an electronic signal, analog provides a more accurate representation of the signal or data. Analog is also a simpler, less expensive way of transmitting data.

Advantages of Digital

Even though digital data may not be as accurate as analog, digital information can be transferred to a digital device such as a computer, which makes editing and reproducing the data an easier, faster process. Additionally, digital data, unlike analog data that is stored on a record or tape, will not wear over time.
