What Is a UPS Class Code?

What Is a UPS Class Code? thumbnail
UPS uses a class code to categorize packages.

The United Parcel Service, or UPS, is an international shipping corporation based in the United States. It assigns a freight class code to every package it accepts for delivery. This helps indicate its standard characteristics for handling and pricing.

  1. Definition

    • The UPS class code refers to the assignment of a National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) developed by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association to freight shipped by ground. All ground freight must have the correct NMFC listed on its bill of lading, otherwise the freight can't be properly handled or priced.

    Types

    • There are 18 NMFC categories that range from a low class of 50 to a high class of 500. Freight is grouped into a category based on density, stowability, handling and liability. These four factors determine the freight's transportability. The price you are charged for delivery is based on transportability, weight and distance.

    Considerations

    • UPS uses an online system to enable you to price your shipment and arrange for pick-up. The system helps you select the proper NMFC, but if you have any doubts, call UPS directly. Using the correct NMFC is as important as indicating the correct weight of the shipment for pricing purposes.
