Consider the Perimeter
-
The minimum size for an island is about 4 feet long and 2 feet deep. However, the size of the island is not the only thing to consider when deciding to use a kitchen island. It is important to measure the available space surrounding the island. Three feet is always a fair distance to measure between the edge of any side of the island and any other adjacent wall, cabinet, or appliance. If your space allows, 42 inches are preferred for additional navigation space.

Smaller Kitchen Islands
-
There are some alternatives for smaller kitchens. One option is to use a portable island, which can be moved freely around the kitchen. Even though portable islands are smaller, they function the same as stationary islands.
