What Is a Partial-Metal Denture?

People who are missing teeth have several replacement options. Among them are partial metal dentures, which use molded metal framework to fit around existing teeth and provide the wearer with fake teeth where theirs are missing.

Composition

First made with silver, the framework for partial metal dentures now often contains a cobalt alloy. False teeth and a plastic material simulating the gums are then added to complete the partial.

Benefits

Because the metal in partial metal dentures, also referred to as cast partials, does not directly touch the patient's gums, they rarely cause sore spots. This type of dentures rarely requires realignments.

Costs

As of November 2010, metal-framed dentures cost between $1,100 and $1,800. This compares to plastic-based dentures of between $700 and $1,100 and flexible base dentures ranging from $1,000 and $1,400.
