About HID Headlamps
High intensity discharge headlamps produce significantly more light than conventional tungsten or halogen bulbs. They were first introduced as an option on the BMW 7 series in 1991 and have become a frequent aftermarket addition to vehicles.

Advantages
-
HID headlamps have a greater efficacy than ordinary tungsten or halogen bulbs. They produce higher levels of light for a given power and are, therefore, not only more efficient, but they improve a drivers visibility. Typical service life is twice that of a conventional headlamp.
Disadvantages
-
The most significant disadvantage is the increased glare for oncoming motorists caused by the higher intensity light. Glare can be reduced with the use of auto-leveling to adjust the light based on driving conditions. HID headlamps are not easily interchangeable with standard fittings. Buying an entire unit increases your costs but its longevity offsets the extra cost somewhat.

Legality
-
HID headlamps are legal in the U.S., and in the UK under EU regulations. Conversion kits are illegal in both the U.S. and the UK, thus HID headlamps must only be installed as a complete system.
