What to Look for When Buying a Used 4X4

Buying a used 4X4 requires additional inspection over a two-wheel drive.

Buying a used 4x4 is similar to buying other used cars, but the additional features of a four-wheel drive requires a more thorough inspection. Not only do four-wheel drives have additional equipment to inspect, they are often subjected to more strenuous use.

Look Underneath

Four-wheel drives might have been subjected to rough use in off-road situations. By checking out the underside of the vehicle, a buyer can look for damage that may have occurred. Buyers should examine the CV boots, shocks, brake lines, and exhaust in particular for damage.

Test Drive

During the test drive, the vehicle should be placed into four-wheel drive and driven. Drive the 4x4 at low speed in a parking lot and drive in tight circles, and use all the gears. While more noise is normal as more parts are operating, clunking or grinding sounds are not normal and should be inspected further.

Daily Use

While driving a four-wheel drive is comforting in snow and other low-traction situations, most drivers will spend a a majority of time driving their 4x4's on pavement. Buyers should be certain that the vehicle's size, seats, gas mileage, and other features will meet their daily driving needs.
