VoIP allows you to use your high-speed Internet connection for phone service.

Voice over IP (VoIP) offers fully-featured phone services at competitive pricing, perfect for households that have cell phones in addition to a land line, or even those on a budget. However, VoIP can sometimes come with sound quality issues.

  1. Cable Integrity

    • Make sure that your cables are all in good condition. Replace any cables that are broken, frayed or punctured, as these problems can affect sound quality.

    Bandwidth

    • VoIP uses your Internet connection to send packets of data; if you have other programs using up your bandwidth, this can cause audio problems. Close any programs or downloads while you're on the phone.

    Device Interference

    • If your phone is cordless, make sure that the base is at least four feet away from your router; sometimes the router signal can interfere with the signal from the telephone.

    Telephone Issues

    • Some problems with sound quality can come from the handset itself; old or cheap phones often have lesser sound quality. If you hear an echo or warble, try a different headset.
