The Average Monthly Price for Assisted Living

Growing old takes courage, for the elderly and their loved ones. When everyday tasks become difficult, assisted living may be the best option for seniors. Before making the move to assisted living, seniors should evaluate the costs and determine which option is right for them.

Assisted living is for seniors who need help with tasks such as cooking, cleaning or getting to the bathroom. Assisted living can provide residents with a homier feel than a nursing home can but it is not for seniors who need around-the-clock care.

Costs

According to the 2009 MetLife market survey of assisted living costs, the national average assisted living rates are $3,031 monthly or $36,372 annually --- a 3.3 percent increase over 2008. Medicare will not pay for the costs of assisted living. If you have a long-term insurance plan, check with your provider to see how much of assisted living would be covered.

Considerations

Before deciding on an assisted living facility, ensure you know when and how the facility bills, and whether it charges a flat fee or charges for additional services. Also try to research how much the rates at the facility have increased in the past so you can estimate what you can expect in the future.
