What Is a Computer Router Hub?
Routers and hubs are network devices that perform different functions but often are combined into a single device. With a combination router/hub, several computers may receive a network connection from one location.

Hubs
-
A hub is a device with plugs for several physical network connections. Computers connected to the same hub can communicate over a local network. Hubs are similar to switches, which provide parallel functionality with additional options.
Routers
-
Routers are network translators. They receive a signal from a modem and convert it into data a computer can interpret. A router may have a wireless broadcaster, physical ports for connections, or both. In home networking, a router is most commonly the device connected between the computer and the phone line.

Combination Devices
-
Although not all combination devices are advertised as such, a router with more than one physical connection plug also works as a hub, as the connected computers may communicate with the Internet and with each other. Even routers provided for home use often include hub functionality for a small number of computers.
