Oil, also called petroleum, refers to a yellow-to-black liquid found underground. As of 2010, oil provides over 40 percent of the United States' energy requirements, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

  1. Historical Uses

    • Ancient Egyptians used oil for embalming. Ancient Babylonians, Assyrians and Sumerians used oil for waterproofing and mortar. Oil has also been used to treat gout, frostbite and other medical conditions.

    Modern Uses

    • Oil is used to create several types of fuel, such as gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel and propane. Oil is also used to create bubble gum, deodorant, eyeglasses, ink, tires, crayons and heart valves.

    Oil Leaks

    • Oil leaks occur as a result of tank or pipeline leaks, improper disposal of motor oil or gasoline, and spills from ships. However, most of the oil found in the ocean has naturally oozed through the ocean floor.

    Fun Fact

    • The word "petroleum" translates to "oil from the earth." The word was first recorded in 1556.
