A 3G Microcell is a small cellular base station, also referred to as a femtocell. A 3G Microcell is used to extend or improve cellular service in homes and small businesses.
A 3G microcell is a small box that is plugged into a wireless router. When a cellular user is in range and identified as an authorized user, the device connects to the microcell, in the same fashion as a cell phone tower. The device then uses the connected broadband signal to route the call as appropriate.
Typical microcell range is in the order of 10 to 12 meters. This small range allows household and small business users the coverage they need, without overlapping or interfering with their neighbors.
Microcells are available from most major cellular phone companies. In the United States, microcells are available from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Some users may incur additional charges when installing a microcell.
