A rearview mirror allows the driver of a vehicle to see through the back windshield. The State of Texas transportation code outlines laws regarding vehicle equipment, including mirrors.
The State of Texas requires that motor vehicles have mirrors that allow the driver to see at least 200 feet behind the vehicle. This is in accordance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which mandate that motor vehicles have a rearview mirror. Mirrors are illegal if they are cracked or damaged or not securely mounted to the vehicle.
A rearview mirror is an important safety feature for a motor vehicle. Federal standards were implemented in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that result from drivers not having a clear view behind the vehicle.
Since Texas law requires that motor vehicles have a rearview mirror, driving without one can result in a ticket. Also, the State of Texas requires all registered motor vehicles to have an annual safety inspection. Failure to have a legal rearview mirror will result in a failed inspection and driving without a valid safety inspection sticker can result in a $1,000 fine.
