What Diflucan Is
Diflucan (fluconazole) is an antifungal antibiotic used in the treatment and prevention of fungal infections. According to Drugs.com, Diflucan is indicated to treat a variety of fungal infections, including oral thrush, vaginal yeast infections and systemic yeast infections. It is also indicated for the prevention of fungal infections for individuals whose immune systems have been compromised by AIDS, a bone marrow transplant, or chemotherapy.
Diflucan and its generic, fluconazole, are currently available by prescription only. Both are available in tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous injection.
Other Oral Treatments
Diflucan is not the only oral antifungal treatment. Others include Lamisil tablets, clotrimazole, and nystatin. All oral antifungal treatments are currently available by prescription only.
Over the Counter Treatments
Several antifungal treatments are available without a prescription. These include clotrimazole, miconazole, and tonolfate, which also come in prescription strength versions. These products are available in various forms, such as creams, powders and suppositories.
