Are Male Beagles Bigger Than Female Beagles?

Are Male Beagles Bigger Than Female Beagles? thumbnail
In general, male beagles are larger than female beagles.

Male beagles are generally a little larger than female beagles, but there are exceptions to this rule, depending on the beagle's breeding, bone structure, dieting and exercise.

  1. Facts

    • In general, whether male or female, beagles stop growing by the age of 2, although some beagle puppies stop growing around the age of 18 months.

    Size

    • A male beagle's average weight is between 22 and 25 pounds, and the female beagle weighs between 20 and 23 pounds. However, a smaller beagle may have been bred with two runt beagles to make a smaller dog, which can be between 15 and 20 pounds, regardless of gender. Also, a beagle may run a little larger than average, being between 25 and 35 pounds. This can be due to a larger bone structure, diet or other issues that a veterinarian might want to check out.

    Considerations

    • Two ways to check if your beagle is the correct weight is by looking and touching. The stomach area should curve in a little, and there should be a noticeable distinction between the upper area by the rib cage and the lower area by the stomach. When you feel your beagle's rib cage, it should not be too easy or too hard to find where its ribs are. The ribs should not look as if they are protruding, and they should also not be too covered in skin or fat.
