Tepid showers are part of your emergency preparation.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) establishes conformity standards for US businesses. Emergency eyewashes and showers in workplaces are required to use "tepid" water. ANSI's standard for "tepid" is between 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

  1. OSHA

    • ANSI standards do not have the force of law, but they are influential because the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has adopted them. If you have employees who may need emergency eyewash stations or emergency showers, and there is an injury or accident report, OSHA investigators will ask if your water was between 60 and 100 degrees.

    Time and Distance

    • The ANSI standard requires the temperature to be in range a minimum of six inches from the water outlet. The water should run tepid for a minimum of 15 seconds under steady flow.

    Know the Hazard

    • The ANSI standard for "tepid" is found at the ANSI website, as ANSI Z358.1-2004. It is important to supplement knowledge of the standard with specific knowledge about the chemical exposure hazards in the workplace, because different chemicals react differently based on water temperature.
