When plant remains decompose, the result is compost. The process happens naturally in the wild, and the organic material creates rich, fertile soil. Composting can be done in your yard, or on a small scale inside your home.

Backyard, or large-scale, composting can be done in a couple of ways. You can build or purchase a a system, depending on your needs. To compost recycled food scraps in the kitchen, worm composting is a suitable option. In a food composting box, worms can consume between 4 and 6 lbs. of scraps a week. In six months, you can harvest the worm castings to use as compost.

When starting an outdoor compost pile it is important to turn the pile with a shovel, pitchfork or special aerator in order to keep oxygen flowing through the pile. How to Compost.org notes that the moisture content needs to be kept between 40 and 60 percent for optimum decomposition of organic materials. For indoor composting, you should not put bones, fish, or meat in the worm box because they attract rodents.
