The requirements for vehicle inspection in Florida are far simpler than they were in the past because Florida no longer has laws regulating vehicle emissions. Currently, vehicle inspections only verify that the vehicle being driven is, in fact, the same vehicle that is to be registered. In many cases, such as new vehicle registration and registration renewals, an inspection is not necessary.

When You Need an Inspection

There are only two situations where you need a vehicle inspection before registering your car in Florida: You have just bought a used car in-state or your car comes from out-of-state. Inspections are not necessary for registering a new vehicle that was purchased in-state or for registration renewals in Florida.

Where to Get an Inspection

There are vehicle inspection sites throughout the state that you can find in the local yellow pages. Most mechanics and police officers are also qualified to provide you with a valid inspection.

What an Inspection Entails

Although you should have a mechanic verify that your vehicle is in good running order before driving it, this is not currently part of the Florida vehicle inspection. The only thing the inspector will do is look at your vehicle's VIN number and make sure that it matches the number on your title or lien. Then, the inspector will fill out form HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82402 for you to provide the local tax assessor.

Costs of Vehicle Inspection

The price of an inspection varies according to the inspector. It could be free or as high as $99. Call several inspection sites and compare prices before getting the inspection.
