Diamonds are rare gemstones that vary in cost depending on cut, size, clarity and color. Gemologists specialize in authenticating diamonds and will provide certificates to validate their authenticity.

Expert Insight

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world's largest grading authority for diamonds. It offers professional authentication services for diamonds according to cut, clarity, color and carat; the GIA provides certification and a report of its findings. It has ongoing research programs and training courses and provides information to ensure that the standards of the gem industry are upheld.
Quick Identification Tips
-
Several tests can determine the authenticity of a diamond. Hold the diamond close to your mouth and breathe on it. A real diamond will not fog. A real diamond will not be scratched. If you hold text behind a diamond, it will not be legible through the stone, as it would with manmade materials. If you shine ultraviolet light on a real diamond, it will reflect blue light.

Diamond Certificate
-
When you buy a diamond, you will be given a diamond certificate. If you do not receive one, ask the salesperson for it or do not make the purchase. The certificate states information about the quality of the diamond, including weight and clarity, but does not state the stone's value. Without a certificate, you cannot prove that have purchased a real gem or validate its authenticity. The two most common certificates are provided by the GIA and the American Gem Society.
