Dachshunds are a breed of dog unique for their short legs and long bodies. They were bred to flush out burrowing animals. Due to their unique breeding, dachshunds are susceptible to a variety of breathing issues.

  1. Identification

    • Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany. Their name literally means "badger dog." Given their unique body shape, dachshunds are prone to breathing problems.

    Types

    • Heart problems are common in dachshunds, which lead to breathing problems. Hypothyroidism is also another common issue in dachshunds where metabolic changes lead to breathing issues.

    Warning

    • Dachshunds may suffer from mitral stenosis, a condition where the heart valve is weak. When the valve is weak, blood sometimes flows the wrong direction and results in an enlarged heart. Breathing problems are a key symptom for dachshunds with mitral stenosis.
