Italy is a diverse, modern European country that predates the ancient Romans. You will find monuments bearing testament to its long historical past in every major town and city.

      The Colosseum was built by Vespasian in AD 69 to 79 during the height of the Roman Empire. At that time it staged games where gladiators would fight one another or animals. Today, the Colosseum is a large, open-air museum that receives thousands of visitors every year.

      Constructed between 1301 and 1340, the Doge's Palace in Venice was initially built as a castle but was extended between 1340 and 1350 to include the western wing. The Palace was the residence of the highest ranking Venetian official, the Doge. The Palace is linked to a disused prison by the Bridge of Sighs, in itself a famous Venetian landmark.

    The Leaning Tower of Pisa

      Pisa's leaning tower is one of the most iconic historical monuments in Italy and is the bell tower for the cathedral it stands next to. Construction of this popular tourist attraction began in 1173 and continued for the next 200 years. The tower was built on soft ground and had already begun to lean before the building work had been completed.

      St. Peter's Basilica was built as far back as the fourth century on the site that was purported to be St. Peter's burial ground. Having fallen into disrepair, it was restored by Pope Nicholas V and Julius II in the mid-15th century. Michelangelo is said to have been largely responsible for the design of the famous dome, which is based on a Greek basilica.
