Hospital Fire Safety Policy

Hospital fire safety policy must be followed closely, as many lives could be at stake in a hospital's crowded environment. Fire danger can be high in hospitals, as many devices used produce heat.

Exits

All hospitals must have at least two exits, so if one is blocked during a fire, the other may be used, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (USDL). These exits must be clearly marked and obstructions must be kept away from exits at all times.

Hazards

Employers must tell employees of the hospital about all fire hazards to which they may be exposed. Employers must monitor heat-producing devices on a regular basis, making sure all accidental-ignition parts are working. Employees must be told in advance of any fire-preventing measures they are to take.

Emergencies

Employers must provide an emergency action plan to be followed in case of fire. This should include all evacuation routes for employees and patients.
